Byron Eric Dawson – Grey's Monument
Original pen, ink and watercolour by Byron Eric Dawson (1896–1968), depicting Grey's Monument in Newcastle upon Tyne.
An interesting feature of this particular painting is that the actual work is reproduced in a newspaper article about the artist, entitled Inspired by City Scenes, with the accompanying headline Artist Won Acclaim but Died Penniless.
Byron Eric Dawson was born in Banbury, Oxfordshire, in 1896 and became particularly well known for his architectural drawings and atmospheric paintings of Newcastle and the surrounding North East.
Originally trained as an engineer, Dawson studied art at Armstrong College in Newcastle, where his considerable artistic ability was recognised. Following his studies, he became an assistant master in painting.
Armstrong College subsequently became part of King's College in 1937, eventually forming part of Newcastle University.
Dawson established himself as a professional artist and exhibited at the Royal Academy in London and the Laing Art Gallery in Newcastle.
His reputation as an architectural artist also led to commissions, including work associated with Newcastle's civic and cultural institutions.
A somewhat eccentric and fiercely independent character, Dawson was reportedly reluctant to accept commissions from people he did not particularly like, even when doing so resulted in financial hardship.
Despite his artistic achievements and recognition during his lifetime, Dawson experienced considerable financial difficulties in his later years and reportedly died with very little money in 1968.
Today, his paintings and drawings are appreciated both for their artistic merit and their importance as a historical record of Newcastle and the North East during the early twentieth century.
