Modernist writing table
A fine German Art Deco / Modernist writing table designed by Bruno Paul for the Vereinigte Zoo-Werkstätten, Berlin, from his late-1920s New York line. Crafted from richly figured dark-stained birch with an architectural overhanging top, four drawers, a concealed pull-out writing slide, and original brass bar handles.
Designed by architect Bruno Paul for the Vereinigte Zoo-Werkstätten in Berlin, this writing table forms part of his celebrated New York line from the late 1920s.
The design exhibits strong Modernist character with its cantilevered overhanging top, bold horizontal moulding, and richly figured dark-stained birch finish. Four sleek drawers offer generous storage, while an integrated slide pulls out beneath the top edge to create an extended writing surface.
Measuring just 54 cm in depth, this piece offers exceptional versatility—functioning seamlessly as a writing desk, a sophisticated hall console table.

Bruno Paul was a towering figure in 20th-century German design and a founding member of the Deutscher Werkbund. His studio was a proving ground for the pioneers of Modernism; notably, Ludwig Mies van der Rohe worked in Paul’s Berlin atelier before going on to direct the Bauhaus..
