Large Arts & Crafts Studio Pottery Vase, Attributed to Coldrum Pottery, c.1910

A substantial and highly decorative British Arts & Crafts studio pottery vase dating from the early 20th century and attributed to the Coldrum Pottery associated with Reginald Fairfax Wells.

The vase has a large twin-handled amphora form with a beautifully proportioned rounded body and sculptural handles. The shoulder is decorated with deeply worked stylised floral and foliate motifs, giving the piece a particularly strong Arts & Crafts character.

The stoneware body is covered in a remarkable high-fired crystalline glaze in subtle shades of grey-green and pale turquoise. The glaze has developed considerable variation during firing, producing areas of crystallisation, flowing streaks and changes in colour and texture across the surface.

Experimental glazes were an important feature of Reginald Fairfax Wells' work, and the unusual crystalline glaze, substantial stoneware body, twin-handled form and sculptural quality of this vase are among the characteristics that have led to its attribution to Coldrum Pottery.

The underside bears a large hand-incised LM potter's mark, cut into the clay with a pointed tool before firing. The significance of this mark has not presently been identified. The underside also shows firing irregularities and evidence of grinding associated with the original manufacture and firing of the vase.

The substantial scale, stoneware body, sculptural form and experimental crystalline glaze compare favourably with documented work produced by Reginald Fairfax Wells at Coldrum. However, as the vase does not carry a recognised Coldrum factory mark, the attribution remains unconfirmed.

An impressive and unusual piece of early British studio pottery with considerable presence.

CONDITION

Excellent antique condition. The main body, handles, relief decoration and crystalline glaze are all very well preserved, with no significant chips, cracks or areas of glaze loss.

The underside of the foot shows the expected unglazed areas, firing irregularities and evidence of grinding associated with the original manufacture and firing of the vase.
