Powell Glass Ceiling Light

An exceptional and rare Art Deco pendant light by Whitefriars , England, circa 1930.This ceiling light features a documented Whitefriars shape, executed in the distinctive “cloudy white”  glass produced by Whitefriars during the 1930s. The shade was possibly designed by Marriott Powell and displays beautifully controlled trailed wave lattice decoration, creating subtle movement and depth across the surface together with a wonderfully atmospheric glow when illuminated.

 The combination of the softly opalescent glass and refined modernist form perfectly captures the transition between late Art Deco styling and early twentieth century British modernism. Whitefriars and Heals maintained strong associations during this period, supplying innovative decorative lighting and glass to fashionable interiors of the era.

 Unlike later moulded reproductions or utilitarian opaline fittings, this is a genuinely decorative and artistic period design . The hand-worked nature of the shade is evident throughout in the flowing trail work, organic form and small air bubbles typical of authentic Whitefriars production.

The pendant has been cleaned, sympathetically prepared and rewired, and is ready for installation.

A rare surviving example of British decorative art glass lighting from one of England’s most celebrated glasshouses.

Condition

Very good vintage condition overall with light age-related wear consistent with age and use. The glass presents beautifully with the small air bubbles and organic variations characteristic of authentic hand-blown Whitefriars production and traditional period glassmaking techniques. The chrome fittings have been cleaned and polished. Rewired and ready to use.
