Art Deco Eaton Hall Desk .

A superb English Art Deco desk dating to the 1930’s.

 Constructed in beautifully figured cherry veneers, the desk displays outstanding grain throughout, complemented by a particularly fine rippled sycamore top which provides a striking contrast in both colour and texture. The top shows a strong fiddleback figure with natural chatoyance, creating a subtle shimmering effect across the surface as the light changes.

 The bold geometric design is enhanced by strong architectural lines and gently curved forms typical of the Art Deco period. The drawers are finely made with traditional hand-cut dovetail joints, demonstrating the quality of craftsmanship.

 The desk retains its original carved ivory handles, each individually shaped with a sculptural, faceted form, adding a further level of refinement and detail to the piece.

A particularly distinctive feature is the shaped cupboard doors, which are subtly canted rather than flat, tapering from approximately 1 inch at the base to around half an inch at the top and sides. The doors are veneered in a striking sunray pattern which follows these angles, creating depth and emphasising the strong Art Deco design.

Provenance:
Previously sold by leading Art Deco specialists Cloud 9 Art Deco, who were informed at the time of purchase that the desk originated from Eaton Hall, the Duke of Westminster’s residence. This history has since been confirmed by Cloud 9 and the piece is also referenced in Lancashire Life magazine.

Condition

Very good  condition. The desk has been professionally restored in our workshop  with minor age-related marks to the veneers. Internal handles show some natural discolouration. The reverse is unfinished in mahogany, as intended for placement against a wall. Working locks with original keys
