Art Deco Desk 

A fine Art Deco Fall front bureau from Waring and Gillow designed by Serge Chermayeff. In Burr Walnut with Ebony inlay . Labelled in the drawer and stamped Waring and Gillow on the locks.

In excellent condition it retains its original fine quality nickel handles three working locks with key.

Chermayeff was a Russian born architect and designer who was enlisted as director of Waring & Gillow’s new Modern Art Department, he partnered with French designer Paul Follot, who was head of the firm’s Paris design studio. Together they attempted to bring a progressive Art Deco style to the company, and in 1928 they opened the influential exhibition : ‘Modern Art in Decoration and Furnishing’ in London.

Chermayeff is notably best known as joint architect along with Erich Mendelsohn of the De Le Warr Pavilion in Bexhill-on-Sea in 1935 - which is accepted as being the first major Modernist public building in Britain.
